Celebrating Christmas: The Responses
12/27/09
Dr. Phil Wilkes, Luke 2:16-20
Christmas can evoke a lot of different feelings and responses from people. Some look forward to the parties, good food and being with family. Children are excited about what they might find under the Christmas tree on Christmas morning. Parents may be dreading the arrival of the bills they know will come. Many will choose to participate in special Christmas worship experiences.
When Christ was born we see various reactions to the birth of Jesus. Some rejoice and celebrate while others become fearful and angry. When people encountered Jesus they could not remain neutral about Him. They either chose to follow Him or go their own way. How will you choose to respond to the gift of Jesus in your life this Christmas?

Celebrating Christmas: The Cost
12/13/09
Dr. Phil Wilkes, Phillipians 2:5-11
The average amount that a family in the United States will spend on Christmas will be between $500-$1000. If you wanted to give all the gifts mentioned in the Twelve Days of Christmas song it would cost $18,348.87. There is a cost for Christmas. But it is not defined by dollars and cents.
We celebrate Christmas because Jesus Christ was willing to leave heaven and allow Himself to be born a tiny infant in crude surroundings. Jesus gave up all the privileges of heaven to live as one of us and to bring us the free gift of eternal life. The gift of salvation is free to us but it cost God his only Son. This year as you celebrate Christmas remember the incredible lengths God has gone to because He loves you.

Dr. Phil Wilkes, Matthew 1:18-25
Joseph is only mentioned 12 times in the gospels. Yet he played a significant role in helping bring Jesus into this world. From how he responded to Mary when she told him she was pregnant to caring for her through the pregnancy and after the birth we learn some important lessons. Joseph cared about people and put that care into action. He believed God could work any way he chose. Joseph also was willing to trust God and do what the Lord asked of Him even when it did not seem to make sense. Imagine the impact you will have as you put care into action and as you live out your faith trusting God for the results. Joseph shows us how to live out faith in God in practical ways.

The Hanging of the Green worship service is an opportunity to celebrate the beginning of Advent. Advent means "a coming" and celebrates the coming of Jesus Christ born as a baby to deliver us from our sins. The Hanging of the Green service helps explain what the various symbols used at Christmas represent in regards to our Christian faith. For example, the evergreen represents eternal life offered by Jesus. Bells have been used to annoucnce the birth of royalty. The circle design of the wreaths symbolize the never ending love of God for us. Throughout this special service we are given many reminders about how much God loves us and the great lengths that He went to by sending his only son to be born, grow up and die on a cross for us.

As we reflect on our own spiritual heritage, we are reminded of the bigger picture of the Israelites Advent, awaiting the Messiah who would rescue them in so many ways. We read all throughout the Prophets of the deep, intense longing for this day to come, for God's promised One to arrive!
We are also reminded of our own personal Advent, if we are a believer and follower of Christ. How we also were exiled from God, slaves to sin and longed for the day when we would be at peace, in our inner hearts and outer lives.
Once we grasp the full, breathtaking meaning of Jesus' birth, the Messiah finally coming, we realize that His coming changed the world and can transform lives! So, shouldn't our celebration of His birth do the same?
This year, let's Worship God in loud, bold, creative ways!! Spend less on unimportant things! Give more of our time, presence and resources with glad hearts to those who truly need it the most! Love all people through sharing the love of God, through telling the story of Jesus over and over again!

This is the Life: Sacrifice Required
11/15/09
Dr. Phil Wilkes, Romans 12:1-2
Paul writes in these verses about fully giving yourself to Christ. He says you are to become “living sacrifices.” Whether in your personal life, in relationships or with your possessions you surrender control to Christ. You choose to live for Him instead of yourself. You put your trust in Him to take care of you instead of holding on tightly to “your stuff.” Instead your life becomes a daily offering to Christ. Christ calls you to sacrifice yourself in small ways, one decision, one relationship at a time so that you might enjoy an ever increasing intimacy with Him.

Too many times people are paralyzed by their past. But our past does not have to rob us of what God can do for us now and in the future. In John 8 a woman caught in the act of adultery is brought to Jesus. Her sinful past was now haunting her. When she encounters Jesus he does for her the unexpected. He forgives her and sets her free from her past. His forgiveness enables her to move forward with a new life. He tells her “go and sin no more.” What a gift. Christ can set you free from whatever is in your past. Regardless of how you may have failed or sinned, Christ is ready to forgive you and give you a new beginning. Turn to Christ and you will discover the same fresh start that this woman was given by Christ.

Developing A Healthy Faith: Do Good People Really Go to Heaven?
10/11/09
Dr. Phil Wilkes, John 14:6; John 3:16-17
Do good people really go to heaven. If so, then how good is good enough? How do you know when you have met the threshold of “good”? When do you reach the point of having enough good deeds that you qualify for eternal life and spending eternity in heaven with a Holy, Righteous God? Yes, God loves every one of us. The answer to this dilemma is found in what Jesus Christ has done for us on the cross. Tragically, according to a George Barna survey, only 47% of “born again” Christians believe that you cannot earn your way into heaven by being a good person. 53% of Christians really believe good people are somehow going to get into heaven. This message asks and seeks to find an answer to the question of who really can get into heaven and live with God.

There are some Christians who still believe that God only speaks to certain people. While God may choose to deal directly with a pastor or teach, some believe God doesn’t communicate directly with them.
In this passage Jesus declares that those who know Him will hear his voice. When Christ is the center of your life, the Shepherd will speak to you. The decision of how you respond to the shepherd is left to you. You can choose to follow Christ or go your own way. Following Jesus means you will have to make some adjustments in your life. Obedience to obeying Christ is not cheap. But there is no better place to be than right where the Shepherd is leading you.

Some Christians have the idea that God only speaks to special people. In the Bible we read about God speaking to Moses, Abraham, and the prophets. In the New Testament we read about encounters people had with the Lord such as Paul and Peter. Today we know God speaks to great servants like Billy Graham. But God also speaks to every one of His children. Jesu tells us in John 10 that his sheep will hear his voice. Jesus Christ wants to speak to you and do an amazing work in your life. The question is how does God speak and what do you do when He does? This message will seek to help you learn how to hear God’s voice.

Recipes for the Family: Choosing A Healthy Alternative
06/26/09
Dr. Phil Wilkes, Joshua 24:14-15
You have a lot of choices in preparing meals. You can go elaborate or simple. Vegetarian or a meat lover’s dream. Low Sodium. Low fat. Low calorie. Or you can load up on the fat and calories. You could even serve all desserts if you want to do that. As the one preparing the meal you can do whatever you want. You could serve your family really tasty, high calorie, high fat, loaded with sugar and carbs kind of meals every day. But it wouldn’t take too long for negative health issues to crop up as well. You are going to give them some healthy alternatives.
When it comes to our family, we want to be sure we are giving them a balanced, healthy diet, at least most of the time. The same should be true for the total development of our family. From emotional well being to physical to spiritual health, we should be seeking to provide nourishment that will help them grow into healthy adults.
Today is Father’s Day. We celebrate our dad’s this morning. I also want to help our dads consider the incredible influence you can have in your family. This influence is especially critical in the spiritual development of your kids. Helping them fall in love with Jesus Christ is both a privilege and a responsibility God has given you.
We discover that Joshua made the decision that regardless of what anyone may do, He was going to lead his family to serve and love God. We will consider how we can lead our families to do the same.

However, at home you may use fresh ingredients. When you eat them there is an amazing difference in the quality and taste compared to institutionalized vegetables at the restaurant.
When it comes to our families there are some ways you can strengthen, encourage and affirm those in your family. You can choose to add some fresh ingredients that will absolutely enhance your family.
Here is the danger. Many people work long hours and have little time to go home and prepare a meal. So they do the next best thing. They go out. Eventually you begin to accept the quality of institutional food as the norm. As time goes by you begin to accept that this is the way all food should taste or be prepared. But on that occasion when you do eat freshly prepared vegetables you are reminded that there is better quality and that the taste is greatly enhanced because they are freshly prepared.
The same thing can happen in our families. You can experience relationships in your family that are filled with conflict, perhaps a lack of caring, always limited by the other person or never given help in navigating life. You may even begin to believe this is the way it is for everybody. But then you get a glimpse of another family that seems to be different. They find ways to support each other, encourage one another and to actually enjoy being together. You don’t have to settle for something less than what God desires for you in your relationships and interaction with other people in your family.
In this story Jesus tells about the dad and two sons we learn some things about how to build up and strengthen those in our family.

Your faith in Christ lived out in relationships you have with others can make a difference. Paul encourages Timothy to set an example for others in his speech, life, loving others, faith in God and purity.

In Chapter 6 Paul turns his attention from relationships to spiritual warfare. Spiritual warfare is not an option for a Christian. In this war there is no cease-fire, no truce, and no time outs. This is not a battle that can be fought with conventional weapons. The enemy is cunning and evil. His desire is to disrupt and ruin lives. Fortunately the war has already been won by Jesus Christ. The Lord’s resurrection sealed Satan’s defeat. Paul urges Christian to put on and use the spiritual armor given to us by God to protect us in this spiritual battle. Through Jesus Christ you can overcome all the schemes of the enemy. James says “resist the devil and he will flee from you.”

Dr. Phil Wilkes, Ephesians 5:21-6:9
In this passage the Apostle Paul describes the relationship that exists between a husband and wife. The foundation for this relationship is Jesus Christ. When a husband and wife are both serving Christ then they no longer live selfish lives and become more concerned with serving their spouse. The Apostle says that husbands are to love their wives as Christ loves the church. Christ’s love led him to give up his life on the cross. When a husband is loving his wife unconditionally and meeting her needs then she is going to want to voluntarily submit and cooperate with her husband. Marriage can be transformed when Christ is the center and both husband and wife submit first to Jesus Christ as Lord.

Jesus Comes to You

Dr. Phil Wilkes, Matthew 21:1-13
Jesus entered Jerusalem during Passover to great excitement. But the cheering crowds quickly died away when it dawned on them that Jesus was not going to what they wanted. He was not going to be their political messiah. Yet Jesus did come to set people free. He came to meet the deepest needs that we have. The Lord’s actions in the temple took many by surprise. The Lord did come to set people free, just not in the way that some thought.

Paul makes a shift in chapters 4-6. In the first three chapters his focus was on building a theological foundation. Now he shifts his focus to the practical side of living out your faith in Christ. Paul urges Christians to live in humility, gentleness and patience. As you do unity is created among Christians and in the body of Christ. This unity is to be protected and nurtured. As we come together God places spiritual gifts in your life to use to serve the Lord and other believers. As Christians use their gifts within the context of the body of Christ (the local church) then the entire body is built up. As you are strengthened in your faith you will not be tricked by false teachings. Your faith in Christ will mature and grow.

Paul writes to express how he is praying for the Christians in Ephesus. From his letter you discover some powerful ways to pray for other people. Jesus taught us that God wants us to be intimate with Him and bring everything of concern to Him for others and ourselves. As you pray for others you can ask God to give them strength, be grounded in their relationship with Jesus, understand the depth of Christ’s love for us, and to have your life totally consumed by God’s presence. When you pray for someone Paul says that God will do even more than you could imagine to ask. The next time you are concerned for someone start praying for them. Pray as Paul did for that person to know fully the presence of Christ in their life.

Which Way Will You Walk?
01/04/09
Dr. Phil Wilkes, Ephesians 4:1-3
As we enter a new year there will be many decisions you have to make every day. Some of those will be simple ones. Others will be more difficult. When you become a Christian there is an expectation that you will walk in a different way than before you knew Christ. Knowing Christ will inform the decisions you make every day. They are now under the control of Christ.
Paul urges Christians to walk in a manner worthy of the calling received from Christ. You will have the opportunity to decide in the new year how you will live your life. Paul urges Christians to make the effort to live in such a way that Christ is honored each day. In fact, the evidence of Christ controlling you is seen in how you treat other people. Each day you can choose to walk with Christ and allow him to work through you to encourage others, to build them up, to bear their burdens and to love them when they are at their worst. The question is “which way will you walk?” Will you choose to walk in such a way that you are making an eternal difference in people’s lives?
