Immanuel: God With Us
12/26/10
Dr. Phil Wilkes, Zephaniah 3:14-20
In this passage we are reminded that God takes great delight in those who come to Him. He even rejoices over his beloved in song. God also wants to meet your needs and care for you. Our greatest need is forgiveness for our rebellion or sin. Zephaniah says the Lord has taken away your punishment. God has made a way for you to be forgiven through Christ. God also assures you of his protection and peace as you walk with him through life. There will be ups and downs, valleys and mountaintops. All along the journey God will care for you. God has a great plan for your life as you journey with Him. He will supply your needs and empower you to live out his great plan for your life. There is no greater place to be than moving with the Lord in the direction he has for you.

The Gift of Love
12/19/10
Dr. Phil Wilkes, Luke 2:1-20
The Christmas story is all about Jesus. It is the fascinating journey of God breaking into our world in the form of a tiny, defenseless baby. This baby would become the Savior of the world. Following God is not always easy. Joseph and Mary faced challenges by cooperating with God in this plan for Mary to give birth to Jesus. She was unmarried which was a scandal in itself. Joseph had to have total trust in Mary to believe that she was not pregnant by some other man.
After Jesus birth there are a variety of responses to Him, some negative and some positive. The shepherds left their flocks to come see what the angel told them. Herod, however, was in fear because a new king threatened his position. The religious leaders were filled with pride and couldn’t believe that the messiah would be born to peasants on the back side of an inn. Finally, we see the magi as they journey to find this new king. They come having invested their talents to identify the location, using their time to journey to the new king and giving him their very best treasures.
What will your response to Jesus be this Christmas? God sent Jesus just for you. He waits for you to welcome Jesus into your life.

Experiencing Christmas Joy
12/12/10
Dr. Phil Wilkes, Luke 2:25-26, 36-38
Kids have a hard time waiting for Christmas day. They look forward to the surprises that they will receive. They wait in eager anticipation. What have you waited for? Perhaps you waited for an answered prayer from God, maybe an email or phone call from a loved one or results of a medical test. Or could it be you have waited to see extended family that come to your house for Christmas.
There are two people in Luke’s gospel that are not found in any of our Christmas songs or Christmas displays. They are Anna and Simeon. Both were waiting for God to send the Messiah. Both saw Jesus when Joseph and Mary brought Jesus to the temple just a couple of months old to dedicate Jesus to the Lord. Both received far more than they could have expected.
Simeon was looking for the Messiah to bring consolation to his people. Maybe you need God’s consoling. Perhaps you have been hurt by someone who made a promise to you but didn’t keep it. Or maybe you have been serving Christ and others are ridiculing you for your faith.
Anna was also waiting for the Messiah but for a different reason. She was looking forward to the redemption of her people. The Israelites were under Roman rule and oppression. She hoped the Messiah would redeem or set them free. Maybe you are struggling with some sin that seems to never lose its grip on you. Jesus can redeem you and set you free.
So what are you waiting for this Christmas? Keep your heart and mind focused on the Messiah, Jesus Christ, and you will experience more this Christmas from God than you could ever imagine. Merry Christmas!

Crossroads of Faith: You Want Me to Do What?
11/07/10
Dr. Phil Wilkes, Matthew 28:19-20
What comes to mind when you hear the word “witnessing” or “evangelism”? Many Christians break out in a cold sweat. Some might prefer a root canal over having to go out and witness. Could it be because Christians have gotten some bad information about what it means to witness”?
Jesus is speaking to those who had been with Him for a while. They saw Him heal people, forgive sins and show unconditional love to people that society had thrown away. Now they are being instructed to go and tell others the good news about Jesus.
The word “gospel” comes from Old English which literally means to tell the “good story.” Your relationship with Jesus is unique to you. How you knew you needed Christ to forgive your sin, who helped you come to trust Jesus, and how Jesus has worked in your life is your good story. Our Lord simply says as you go through your day share the good story of what Jesus Christ is doing in your life. He will draw others to Himself through you.

Crossroads of Faith: Does Church Matter?
10/31/10
Dr. Phil Wilkes, Hebrews 10:23-25
Is church still relevant in our time? The author of Hebrews writes to Christians who were tempted to return to old ways of living. Some were being persecuted for their faith in Jesus. He implores Christians to continue to gather together to worship God, build each other up, encourage one another, and care for one another.
The church today is the body of Christ. Every part is important and necessary. The Apostle Paul tells us that God places each of us in the body where he wants us to be. The church is not a building but the people who gather together to worship the Lord.
We need each other. Life is difficult and challenging. It can quickly become overwhelming. This message encourages you to reflect on the importance of being connected to God’s people in a local church. Yes, the church matters to God because the church is made up of people that Christ died for.

Crossroads of Faith: Letting Go
10/10/10
Dr. Phil Wilkes, Matthew 18:21-35
It’s something that we all want and yet it is something that often we are unwilling to give. Forgiveness is what we want when we offend God or someone else. Yet when others hurt us it isn’t always given.
Peter asks Jesus how many times you are to forgive someone. The common answer was 3 times but on the fourth occasion you did not have to forgive. Jesus answer points to forgiving without limits. He gives a parable to illustrate how forgiveness should happen with those who follow Christ.
If we are going to call ourselves disciples of Jesus then we will have to allow Jesus words in this parable become alive in us. As Christ followers we do not have the luxury to pick and choose the parts of scripture we want to follow. We do not have the freedom to ignore the parts which call for commitment, sacrifice or endurance.
Paul says in Ephesians 4:32 that Christians are to be kind to one another, forgiving each other just as Jesus has forgiven you. Is there someone you need to forgive today?

Crossroads of Faith: Do You Hear Me Now?

Dr. Phil Wilkes, Matthew 6:5-14
This message examines the importance and priority of prayer. Jesus shares with us how to talk with God in the “Lord’s Prayer” The early church was birthed out of God’s people gathering together to pray regularly. Throughout history times of spiritual revival have occurred as the direct result of God’s people spending time together as well as alone to pray for God to change hearts. We have the privilege of coming into God’s presence every day to intercede for others and ourselves. We can gather with other Christians to intercede for others before the Lord. As in history, we will see God moving in mighty ways to bring people to Christ, to heal broken relationships, to restore friendships and set people free from addictions as we make the commitment to pray together as well as individually.

Crossroads of Faith: Let The Past Be The Past
09/19/10
Dr. Phil Wilkes, Psalm 51
What do you do when you have done things you know are wrong? Some try to ignore them but on the inside they are consumed with guilt. Others try to cover over the guilt with hobbies, a relationship, work, success or something else. All the while you are still empty, frustrated and cannot find peace.
King David discovered when he was silent about his adultery with Bathsheeba the guilt overwhelmed him. He also experienced what can happen when you ask God to forgive you. God forgave David and removed his guilt. The Lord gave him peace and joy where there had been guilt and sadness. David didn’t pretend he was innocent. He didn’t try to blame others for his own sin. He took responsibility for it. Once he did, he discovered the mercy and forgiveness of God.
Your past does not have to paralyze you. You don’t have to remain a prisoner to things you did wrong. Christ can forgive you and renew you. He can give you freedom to experience life to the full. You don’t have to live another day as a prisoner to your past. Let Christ give you freedom.

In this sermon, we will talk about the need and value of recognizing Jesus' authority over all things, including our big and small life details, and that we must act on the belief we have. If we believe Jesus can do_____, we must actually live it. We will also see that we must approach Jesus with bold humility, realizing that while He CAN do all things, there are times when there is a greater thing in store that what we can see, and we must trust God with that as well.

Freedom In Christ - Speaking Correctly
07/25/10
Dr. Phil Wilkes, Matthew 12:22-37
Jesus continues to transform lives during his public ministry. When he casts a demon out of a man he is accused by the Pharisees of being the prince of demons. Words are powerful. What you say comes from what is in your heart. The Pharisees reveal their hearts are far from God by their accusations against Jesus. Their own words condemn them. Jesus tells us that by sinning against the Holy Spirit a person commits a sin that cannot be forgiven. It is committed with words that come from a heart that no longer is sensitive or responds to the Holy Spirit in one’s life.
This message examines what the unpardonable sin is and how your words reveal the true condition of your heart and soul. The good news is when you allow the Holy Spirit to change your heart you become a child of God, born again, free from the control of a sinful nature and given a new life in Christ.

Dr. Phil Wilkes, 1Corinthians 7:32-35
Families today come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The Apostle Paul addresses various ways that family can exist throughout this chapter. Whatever configuration you have in your family it is vital you allow God’s truth to guide your relationships and actions. Commitment is also necessary to build a healthy family. One of the key ingredients to binding your family together is the same love that you experience from Christ. Just as the Lord forgives you, gives you second, third and fourth chances so we need to show the same grace within our family. Unconditional love will enable you to build a vibrant healthy family, that while facing challenges and rough spots, will continue to trust and support each other. You and your family will be a beacon of hope to so many who are experiencing pain in their family relationships. Through Christ every family can experience healing, unity and practice unconditional love.

06/20/10
Dr. Phil Wilkes, Deuteronomy 6:4-9
Dads play a pivotal role in the family. Various studies have shown the powerful influence that a dad can have on his wife and children. Not only does a dad provide nurture but also is charged by God with giving Godly teaching to his family. This begins with modeling Godly character in one’s own life. A wise dad will look for teachable moments to help his children come to know the Lord. A dad’s impact continues as he encourages his children to grow and develop the talents and gifts God has placed in their lives. When dad is taking seriously his responsibility to love, nurture and guide his family he is providing a training ground for his children to come to know the Lord, to develop their gifts and become a Godly young man or woman.

Construction Zone – Families Being Built: Use the Right Glue
05/30/10
Dr. Phil Wilkes, Ephesians 5:25-31
When Paul describes the relationship between Christ and the church he intermingles it with a description of the marriage relationship. Christ Agape loved the church but his love didn’t just reveal itself in emotions. Christ lived his love with actions.
What is it that creates a strong marriage that can endure the challenges, trials and up and downs of life? Often people think if they have the “feeling” of love that makes them ready for marriage and that feeling will bond them together for life. But we all know emotions can send you on a roller coaster ride.
How do you know when love is such that it will provide the glue for a permanent relationship between a man and woman when they get married? What is it that can enable a husband and wife to continue to live out their love for each other through the hardships, challenges, disappointments, celebrations and victories that they will share?
This message examines some of the qualities that can create a healthy, vibrant marriage that lasts a lifetime. The glue that binds a couple together begins with the kind of love Christ has for us and that we then share with our spouse.

Walking for Life
03/14/10
Dr. Phil Wilkes, Ephesians 5:1-21
We all know walking is good for your health. In this passage the Apostle Paul describes how we are to walk in terms of our relationship with Christ. Our world is in desperate need of knowing that God loves every person and through Christ offers a new life. As Christians Paul says we are to be imitators of God. We do that by walking in love. Just as Christ loves us unconditionally we are to share Christ’s love with others. We are to walk in light. Your life will be transformed by Jesus and will make an impact on other people. Finally Paul advocates that we walk in God’s wisdom. The only way others will see Christ is as we implement God’s wisdom. By doing God’s will we shine his light on those who don’t know Him. Walking not only provides health benefits it also can be a powerful way to share Christ.

Loving others the same way God loves you is the greatest gift you can give to someone. Paul declares it doesn’t matter how much you know, how many great skills you have, or how many sacrifices you make if you do not love others the way Jesus loves you. He encourages us to share unconditional love with people around us. People around us are hurting, struggling and think they are only worth something if they are able to produce results. What a difference it makes when you begin to love others without expecting anything in return.

Essentials For Living: Hope For The Future

Dr. Phil Wilkes, Amos 9:5-15
There is a huge difference between wishful thinking and hope. Hope is a powerful motivator in our lives. It enables you to keep going when circumstances are not in your favor. Amos delivers a message to the Israelites that they will be taken into captivity by a pagan nation. But in the midst of God’s judgment he also offers hope. Those who turn back to God will come through as a remnant God will re-establish in Israel. God assures those who fully trust Him that they are not abandoned or forgotten even in dark days. They have hope because God is working in their lives. Rediscover hope in your life as you give yourself fully to Christ.

Perhaps you heard about the state dinner with the President of the United States. You must have an invitation to go in and have dinner with our President. However one couple was able to get past security, sneak in, and even shake hands with the President without having an invitation.
You don’t have to do any of that with God. You have an open invitation, 24 hours a day, to come into God’s presence. Prayer is a wonderful gift that we have from God. We are able to spend time with the Lord, bring our concerns and burdens to him, pray for others, seek his help and ask for forgiveness and receive it. Pray is a powerful tool for Christians.
This message takes a look at how we can effectively use prayer and some of the misconceptions about prayer. Jesus regularly went off by himself to spend time with the Father. The early church continually gathered together to pray. We don’t have to spend life consumed by worry and anxiety. Paul says in Philippians 4 when we pray we will experience the peace of God in our lives. Set aside time each day to be with God.
