The Story: Chapter 14
12/30/12
Dr. Phil Wilkes, 1Kings 12-16
God has promised to build a great nation that will reflect his glory to all nations. God desires to bring all of us into a relationship with Himself. He is shaping a nation that will be his chosen people to the world. King Solomon starts off well but he ignored God's warning not to marry foreign wives who could turn his heart away from the Lord. Solomon did not listen to God's instructions. Solomon built temples to the false gods of his wives. After Solomon dies the kingdom is split with 10 tribes in the north and two tribes in the south.
The kingdom's split did not occur because of the actions of his son Rehoboam and a commander named Jereboam. It all happened as a result of Solomon's decision to start worshiping idols instead of staying faithful to the Lord God. It is the remnant of the southern tribe of Judah from which God will bring the messiah, Jesus Christ.
Solomon made choices that had ripple effects on the nation and his own son. Solomon decided not to take God seriously. What will you do? You can leave a great legacy of faith in your family, church and community. As you walk with Jesus, listen to his voice and adjust your life to him you will leave a great spiritual impact on loved ones, friends and colleagues. What kind of faith legacy are you leaving for your family?

The Story: You Are Part of God's Plan
12/23/12
Dr. Phil Wilkes, Matthew 1:18-25
We all make plans in our lives. People plan where they will spend Thanksgiving and Christmas, where to take a vacation, students plan where to go to college, college students plan what to take to complete their degree, some plan a budget or when to have kids or when to retire. We also know that plans don't always work out the way we think they will.
Expect interruptions in life. God came to people in scripture and altered their life plans. When we come to the account of Jesus being born it is very clear that the plans of several people were changed.
You can trust God when He interrupts your life. God spoke to Zacharias, Mary, Joseph, the shepherds and the Magi. They all adjusted their lives to what God showed them. Their response meant changing what they were doing to do what God asked of them. Their obedience to God required trust, sacrifice and risk.
God always leaves us with the choice to obey him or to go our own way. The Lord will never force you to follow Him. Responding to God and his plan for your life calls for faith, sacrifice and commitment.
For all of them-personal plans overshadowed by Gods plans for them. They had to make a choice: work their plan or adjust their lives to the invitation of God to become part of his plan. Often people react with frustration or even anger when their plans don't workout. But what if we could change how we perceive interruptions to our plans? When your plans don't work out what if you were to consider, “is God up to something here?”

Failed Kingship, Failed Fatherhood
12/16/12
Joshua Brownfield, 1Kings 2:1-9
As the kingdom passes from David to Solomon, the father imparts to the son his final instructions. Unfortunately, David's mistakes were repeated by Solomon, in part because he failed to look to God as his Father. For those who are Christians, they too can look to God as their Father because they have been adopted as co-heirs with Christ. Thus, they do not have to repeat the mistakes of their earthly fathers.

The Story: Trials of a King
12/09/12
Dr. Phil Wilkes, 2Samuel 11:1-15
King David failed to guard his heart and it caused him great trouble. He allowed his glances at a woman bathing to lead him to commit adultery with her. David was tempted by what he saw. He could have quickly turned away and removed himself from the temptation but he chose to linger and look. This temptation moved David to act to take Bathsheba for himself. It is not temptation that is a sin but it is what we do when tempted. Do you turn away quickly or do you linger and allow temptation to lead you to actions that are sinful? David did not turn away.
David's sin led him to cover it up. Bathsheba became pregnant. Instead of David owning up to his adultery he covers it up and ends up murdering Bathsheba's husband and marrying Bathsheba. Things may appear good on the outside but on the inside David is consumed by his sin. Guilt is eating him alive. Psalm 32 details David's conviction of sin and agony over his coverup. When you sin the best response is to quickly confess to God your sin and seek his forgiveness. Denial only leads to further pain and heartache. David tried to live as if nothing happened. He soon discovered God loved him to much to let him get away with adultery and murder. His guilt is overwhelming.
The prophet Nathan confronts David over his sins of adultery and murder. Finally David makes a full confession of his wrongdoing to God in Psalm 32. He finally accepts the consequences of his sin.
When God speaks to you about something that is sinful, deal with it quickly. You cannot hide your sin from God. He sees into your heart. Learn from David's experience that covering up sin only leads to further misery. Confession leads to forgiveness and cleansing and restored intimacy with God.

The Story: From Shepherd to King
12/02/12
Dr. Phil Wilkes, 2Samuel 16:1-13
The people of God are in the promised land. But now they want a king so they can be like all the nations around them. God never calls us to be like everyone else but the nation of Israel wanted to have a king so they would look powerful to the other nations. God finally relents and gives them king Saul. Saul's heart isn't on letting God work through him and Israel to reflect God to the other nations.
God chooses a 16 year old shepherd named David. People are surprised that God is choosing a youth to lead his people. No one could have seen that coming. David's dad, his older brother's, Saul and Goliath all underestimated David. It wasn't really David but God working through David that made him so strong and successful.
Just like people underestimated David often the same thing happens today. We sometimes underestimate ourselves. Yet when you surrender your life to Jesus Christ anything is possible. God is not interested in your resume. He is interested in your heart and devotion. As you walk with God, you will see the Lord doing his good work in you and through you. Sometimes the one who underestimates us the most is ourselves. We often limit what we think God can do in us or through us.
God doesn't choose based on outward appearance, God examines the heart. God had been working in David to prepare him to lead Israel. God will be at work in your life. Pay attention to what God is saying to you and quickly adjust yourself to His truth. You will then be amazed at the great things God does in you and through you for his glory.

The Story: Standing Tall, Falling Hard
11/18/12
Dr. Phil Wilkes, 1Samuel 1-15
Judges 21:25 says, “in those days Israel had no king; everyone did as he saw fit.” Today people are still doing what is right in their own eyes. Israel was oppressed by the Philistines and Amonites. The people of Israel thought a king would make their nation powerful and respected. The people want a king. Samuel the prophet warns the people that a king will not be what they think. In the end God relents and lets them have a king even though God would prefer to lead them through his prophets. The people believe a king gives them more security than walking with God. Saul is anointed king but does not always obey God so God has to remove him as king.
Israel wanted to be like everybody else. There is danger trying to blend in with culture. Often it means a departure from what God wants for us. We are called to stand out for Christ, not blend in with the world. The people chose what they could see over walking in faith with God.
Saul rushed ahead of God at times. His circumstances created fear and he made decisions that did not honor God. Your life circumstances can seem overwhelming. Remember that God has not abandoned you. Don't start taking short cuts just because God delays in answering prayer. Trust him and live by his word. Saul's mistake was taking matters into his own hands instead of trusting God to work.
God delights in doing his good work in us. The Lord's love language is obedience. Keep walking with God. Trust him. James 4:10 “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.” That is a great promise of assurance.
God wanted a nation (Israel) that would follow and obey him. God would then bless all other nations through them. Other nations would see God's blessings on his people and be drawn to the Lord also. As you live for Christ, God will use your life to draw others to Jesus. When people see you trusting God in storms and crisis, when they see that you live your faith it will make an impact on them. God will be working through you to bring others into his family.
The people thought a king was the answer. Saul thought doing things his way instead of God's way seemed best. Both were wrong. God can do far more than we can hope or imagine as we trust him.

The Story: An Unlikely Choice
11/04/12
Dr. Phil Wilkes, Ruth 1:1-18
Ruth is a short book with only 85 verses in it. Yet we see God working to bring redemption out of loss. Naomi loses her husband and two sons. She is in a foreign land away from her people. Maybe you have experienced loss in your life that has overwhelmed you. God works in Naomi's life as her daughter in law Ruth returns with Naomi to Israel. Ruth becomes the one to encourage and help Naomi. When you are facing overwhelming situations allow people to walk with you. God will bring folks to encourage and support you. God will also use you to walk with others facing crisis.
When they return Ruth becomes the wife of Boaz. Boaz marries a Moabite, who were enemies of Israel. Why would Boaz marry her? Boaz's mother is Rahab, who was a prostitute. Rahab hid the spies of Israel. Boaz grew up to honor God and protect those less fortunate. God works to bring Ruth and Boaz together and they have a son named Obed. Obed has a son named Jesse. Jesse becomes the father of King David. 28 generations later Jesus will be born from this family line.
When you think everything is bad and there is no hope just know God is still at work in your life. God can work for good in you even when your circumstances are bad. It may feel too late but God is at work. The Lord is faithful. Allow God to do his good work in your story. Be open to all Jesus wants to do in you and through you.

The Story: A Very Few Good Men & Women
10/28/12
Joshua Brownfield, Judges 2:7-22
Judges 2 presents a summary of the remainder of the Book of Judges. Though the Israelites had been delivered by God from Egypt and had seen the conquest, they still turned to false gods. God sent oppressors and deliverers to bring them back, but they did not listen. Their example is a warning to God's New Covenant people, the church, to remember God and to not allow its beliefs to be taken from the wider culture.

The Story: No Magic Formula
10/21/12
Dr. Phil Wilkes, Joshua 1:7-9
The sermon title references a book I read in college that points out that the Israelites did not experience God working among them exactly the same way every time. Neither can we. Sometimes God's ways are surprising, unexpected and always bring more results than we could have anticipated.
No military leader would create a plan that included a marching band circling the walls of a fortified city with large, strong warriors inside. Nor would the final blow be all the soldiers yelling so the walls fall down. But that's exactly what how God enabled Joshua and the people to take Jericho as they moved into the promised land.
God tells his people to observe and keep all the law God gave them at Mt. Sinai. It was their obedience to God that assured the Lord would fight for them. They faced overwhelming odds just like people do today. The walls that intimidate may be a broken relationship, job loss, addiction, or health crisis. As you follow Christ God will be with you. Trust Him. Just as he kept his word to Joshua and Israel God will keep his promises to you.
Be careful that as God does his good work in your life that you don't forget the Lord. The danger for Israel in the new land will be forgetting God when life becomes good for them. In crisis it's easy to cling to God. But when the blessings pour the temptation is to take our focus off Christ. God cautions his people to keep our hearts in tune with Christ, not with the blessings he gives.

The Story: Where Are You Going?
10/14/12
Dr. Phil Wilkes, Deuteronomy 2:7, 6:4-7, 8:1-5
Have you ever started out on a trip only to make a wrong turn and get lost? The Israelites are going to make a wrong turn, ignore what God told them, and it will cost them an additional 40 years in time before entering the promised land. Now that's a really bad wrong turn!
The trip from Egypt to the doorstep of the promised land was about 11-12 days. It took 40 years. Why? Because the people started grumbling and complaining to Moses in the wilderness about how much better it was being in slavery in Egypt than being free. It's so easy to lose perspective and focus on the wrong things. The people quickly forgot all the miracles God did on their behalf to rescue them from slavery. Now they are whining. It's going to get worse.
Moses sends 12 spies into this new land to check it out. 10 of the spies report back the land is good but the people are too big and strong. Only Joshua and Caleb say they can take it and their confidence isn't in what they can do or the strength of their people. Their confidence was in God.
The people made the decision not to enter the land out of fear. They allowed their situation to disorient them to God. They made their decision not to enter the land based on how large the opposition was instead of looking at how much bigger God is.
That one decision to not trust God caused them to wander in the wilderness for 40 years. The people did not trust God and they suffered for their lack of faith. An entire generation dies before seeing the new land.
God does some of his best work in you while you are wandering in the wilderness. God is not in a hurry either. He will take however long is necessary in your life to help you grow and shape you into the image of Jesus.
Finally the Israelites are ready to take the land. But God speaks to them in Deuteronomy 30:19-20. God says he has set before them life and death, blessings and curses. Then the Lord encourages them to choose life by continuing to trust God and follow his guidance.
God invites us to also choose the life he offers in Jesus Christ. It's your move.

The Story: Living God's Way
10/07/12
Dr. Phil Wilkes, Exodus 19:3-8
There is a small segment (2:30) in the middle of the sermon that had poor volume that was boosted as much as possible. After that, the audio returns to normal.
God delivers the Israelites from Egypt and as they move towards the Promised Land God has them stop at Mt. Sinai. This is where God reveals how to relate to him and to other people by giving them what we know as the Ten Commandments. The first 4 deal with our personal relationship with God. The last 6 deal with how we relate to other people.
God also gave instructions on how to build the Tabernacle, the place where God would dwell among his people.
While Moses is on the mountain with God the people get anxious and beg Aaron to make an idol for them to worship, so Aaron does what they ask. When Moses comes off the mountain the people are worshiping a golden calf. God is angry and is ready to kill them all and start over with Moses. Moses prays for the people and God relents from killing them.
God also has to show them how devastating sin is in their lives. The Lord has them to sacrifice a lamb with no imperfections as a blood sacrifice. These animal sacrifices will continue until the final sinless sacrifice of Jesus Christ is made on the cross.
God's people needed to learn how to rightly relate to him and to each other. They also needed to see when they sinned against God there were consequences and sin had to be dealt with. As they move toward the promised land God promises to lead them. The Lord is still leading those who will give him their lives today. Have you opened your heart to Jesus Christ, the sinless lamb of God? That is the first step to rightly relating to God.

The Story: God's Deliverance
09/30/12
Dr. Phil Wilkes, Exodus 13:3
Today we are in Chapter 4 of The Story. God consistently chooses the most unlikely people to be part of his Upper Story. Remember God promised to make of Abraham a great nation. It is from this nation that the messiah will ultimately come.
But there is a problem. The Israelites have been in slavery in Egypt for 400 years. After Joseph died a Pharaoh came to power that did not know Joseph or what he had done for Egypt. This Pharaoh is fearful of the Israelites and orders all male babies killed. Moses mother hides him but can't keep it up for long. She puts him in a small basket and he is found by Pharaoh's daughter who adopts him.
Moses grows up with the best possible education. But after killing an Egyptian who was abusing an Israelite Moses flees to the desert. It is there that God gets his attention and tells him to go to Pharaoh and demand the release of the Israelites. Moses argues with God that he doesn't speak well. But it is exactly through Moses weaknesses that God will display his glory and use Moses to set free the people.
God still delivers people today. He can set you free from whatever has you held in bondage. God can also work through your weaknesses to bring about his plans. Even when you don't feel adequate for the task God asks of you, you can trust him to give you whatever is needed to obey.
God simply seeks those who will trust him and obey him. God will do the rest through that person just as he did through Moses. You can trust God to keep his word to you and do what he says he will do. Adjust your life, like Moses did, to what God reveals to you. You will be amazed at how God works in you and through you.

The Story: Are You There, God?

Dr. Phil Wilkes, Genesis 37:2-8, 12-19
Due to technical difficulties, this podcast has been truncated.
Have you ever been betrayed by someone, especially someone you thought you could trust? It is surprising, shocking, hurtful and discouraging to say the least. Joseph experiences the betrayal of his brothers when sold to a traveling caravan that sells him to the captain of the guard for Pharaoh in Egypt.
So where is God in the crisis? Where is God when your world caves in? God knew where Joseph was and what was happening to him. While in captivity God is blessing Joseph. As a follower of Jesus Christ try to remember God is with you in the storm. Joseph experienced God's faithfulness while in Egypt.
Joseph has challenges and temptations that he must face in Egypt. He chooses to do what honors God but it also cost him more time in prison because of false charges against him. No situation you face is beyond God's ability to work in it to help you. You can depend on God to do good work in you even when you don't think God is doing anything about it.
Joseph did not allow circumstances to define his relationship with God. Joseph allowed his lower story to be captured by God's upper story. God took Joseph and elevated him to 2nd in command in Egypt to save his family from famine. God used something bad, his brothers selling him, to get Joseph into Egypt to be Pharaoh's right hand man to protect the family. It is from this family that God will birth the nation promised to Abraham. Trust God as you face hard times. He will do his good work in you just as he did in Joseph.

The Story: You Want Me to do What?
09/16/12
Dr. Phil Wilkes, Isaiah 6:1-8
Who would you choose to start a new nation? Probably not who God chooses. An elderly couple where the wife is infertile. God asks Abraham and Sarah to pack up and go to a place God would show them later. Abraham obeys even though he does not know their destination or how God is going to give them a son from whom a nation could come.
God chooses people who don't feel qualified or have the proper background. God gives them new names to reflect what he will do through them. Abraham had to trust God when it didn't make sense to do so. But that is where faith comes into play. Faith is trusting God when you are not sure of the outcome.
God gives this couple a son named Isaac. When the boy is 15 God asks Abraham to sacrifice his son. How is God going to build a nation if Isaac is dead? But again Abraham takes the son and puts him on an altar to sacrifice him. At that moment God speaks and stops him from bringing the knife down into Isaac. Abraham passed the test God gave him. The Lord wanted to see if he would obey or hold back his son. Abraham obeyed God. Isaac was alive and from him a great nation would come.
God keeps his promises. Everything he told Abraham came to pass. You can also trust God to keep his promises to you when life gets hard and crazy. God invites you to trust Him and respond in obedience to Him. As a result you will see God working in your life just like God did for Abraham.

The Story: In the Beginning
09/09/12
Dr. Phil Wilkes, Isaiah 6:1-8
he Story is the account of God creating us in his image, having sin destroy our intimacy with God and God's plan to get us back through his son Jesus Christ. The individual stories in the Bible are all held together by God's passion for you and his plan to bring you back into a living relationship with Him through Jesus.
In this passage God creates Adam and Eve in the garden. They are told to enjoy everything there except they were not to eat of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. They disobey God and eat of that tree. With their disobedience sin enters the world. God bans them from the Garden of Eden for their disobedience.
Sin separates you from God. The rest of The Story is telling us how God moves to once again have a personal relationship with us. It will not be easy and will come at an extreme price.
God will eventually give away his own son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross for our sins. God's love for you and his desire to be in a personal relationship with you compelled him to give away his own son. How do you respond to such great love?

Here Am I, Send Me

Dr. Phil Wilkes, Isaiah 6:1-8
During a national crisis where their king has died Isaiah goes to the Temple to worship God and seek direction for his people. During his worship of God he is taken into the very presence of God. Not exactly how he thought his worship would go that day. Isaiah immediately realized the sin in his own life and confesses it. It is interesting to note that Isaiah was not called to serve until his sin had been removed.
God desires relationship with you. Only through trusting Jesus Christ can you be forgiven of sin and become one of God's children. When Jesus enters your heart you also receive the Holy Spirit. Through God's Spirit you are being remade into the image of Christ.
God redeems you to serve Him. You are equipped and empowered by God for what he will ask you to do. Serving God will require sacrifice of time and financial resources. Paul says we are to become “living sacrifices” to God in Romans 12:1-2.
Isaiah responded to God's call for people who will serve Him. His encounter with the living God totally reshaped him. God invited him to be part of his plan to draw others to the Lord. God extends that same invitation to you.

The God of All Comfort (Part I)
08/19/12
Dr. Phil Wilkes, 2 Corinthians 1:1-11
The Apostle Paul describes our Heavenly Father as “the God of all comfort.” If anyone understood the need to be comforted it was Paul. He had suffered many trials for preaching the gospel. He continually dealt with his “thorn in the flesh.” Yet Paul still points us to Jesus as the one who walks with us and gives us comfort when life is overwhelming.
Listen to God in your life. The Holy Spirit will direct and empower you. Read God's word each day. God will speak to you through it.
Look up to God and praise Him. Be reminded that you worship the living God who spoke the world into existence. God also made you in his image. When sin came into the world He came looking for us in Jesus. We can praise God for sending Jesus to be our Savior and Redeemer. Praise him as the Father of all mercies. Lamentations 3:22 says God's mercies never fail.
As you experience God's care and comfort through his word, his Holy Spirit and through other Christians you are then able to give comfort to others in the same way God has helped and comforted you. God is the one who will stay with you when everyone else walks away. God knows just how to give you comfort and help to go through the storms that come in life.

The Believer's Gethsemane
08/12/12
Rev. Joe Hoyle, Mark 14:36
We know that Jesus was fully human and fully God. Oftentimes, we can forget the human part, the part that was susceptible to fear. The Gethsemane story was pivotal moment in the journey to the cross. In the Garden Jesus faced his mortality that he was going to die a death that he didn’t deserve. Not only this but it was going to be brutal and humiliating. There would be no dignity in a death by crucifixion, only shame and scorn.
Even though he knew that this was the plan all along, we see a distressed Jesus in this short text. This is a Jesus still trusting in God and his plan but not opposed to finding another way that didn’t involve the cross. Nonetheless, the “not what I will but what you will” show Jesus’ ultimate resolve to do the will of God.
In our own lives, we come to our own personal Gethsemanes, places were a fork in our spiritual journey leads to a crises of faith. In these moments we have a real decision to make. Yet we are not alone in this. We have both the personal presence of Christ as well as the example that he provides in this text. Here he is on the jagged edge, torn inside but still fully submissive and trusting that God’s way is the best way. Throughout that dark night, Jesus wrestled with his Father, seeking reassurance that this was indeed the way it had to go down.
At the end of the Gethsemane experience, we see a very different Jesus. He says to his disciples “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer.” The Jesus we see here in the end is not a Jesus shuddering with Terror. It is a man who wrestled with God, submitted and resolutely set himself to the will of God.
While the time when we have to step into the garden will inevitably come, may we gain confidence in the example of Christ, who knew the sing of fear but still set himself confidently trusting in a God who is sovereign and above all things. We are never left alone.

Reflections

Rev. Tom Murrell, Matthew 6:33
God offers many shortcuts for receiving His blessings. One powerful shortcut is found in Matthew 6:33. ‘But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.’
God promises to bless you with all your needs – not necessarily all your wants – if you place two things “first”:
Here are ways to measure how well you are seeking God’s righteousness:
There is an eternal reason why God instructs the Christian to be holy:
“He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still.” (Revelation 22:11). The second half of this verse reveals at least two regions in Heaven for the Christian one for the Christian who God declares to be ‘righteous’; another for the Christian who God declares to be ‘holy’. Note the word ‘still’ For eternity future, a Christian’s position in Heaven will never change. The greatest privileges and rewards in Heaven will be for those Christians God declares to be ‘holy’.

God promises to bless you with all your needs – not necessarily all your wants – if you place two things “first”:
- The Kingdom of God – Seeking the ‘Kingdom of God’ means to become a Christian by seeking salvation being born again. Jesus explains, “Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God… Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God…Ye must be born again.” (John 3:3, 5, 7) Jesus is declaring that you enter into the Kingdom of God when you are born again. ‘Born Again’ means to believe the gospel the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ (I Corinthians 15:1-4). You must believe that Jesus indeed rose from the dead, and you are to confess such (Romans 10:9-10).
- God’s Righteousness – Seeking God’s Righteousness means to make Jesus lord over all your life, after you first become a Christian.
Here are ways to measure how well you are seeking God’s righteousness:
- Are you abiding in Christ and, at the same time, are His words abiding in you? “
- Do you have the faith of a little child?
- Do you strive to follow Jesus every day?
- Do you desire to live a holy life, and do you understand why that is eternally important?
There is an eternal reason why God instructs the Christian to be holy:

What Will Jesus Say To You?
07/29/12
Dr. Phil Wilkes, Matthew 25:31-46
Jesus tells some parables in Matthew 25. One is about God separating people into two groups known as the sheep and the goats. The sheep are those who trust in Christ and belong to God's family. Those who are the sheep are praised by God for how they have lived their lives. It is not that their good works saved them. But the result of their relationship with God through Jesus transforms their lives so they want to honor Christ by how they live.
What are the characteristics of those praised by God as his sheep? Simple acts of kindness are done to help others. The righteous use their resources to be a blessing. The people on the left (the goats) ask “when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?”
Jesus says “whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.” It is their utter failure to do good. They failed to notice the opportunities to help others. God blesses you so you can be a blessing to others.
The righteous are surprised by the significance of their actions. Every act of care and compassion given to someone is the same as doing it to Jesus. We are God's hands and feet as Christians.
God will judge every person. His verdict will be just and righteous. Everything hinges on your response to Jesus Christ and then allowing the Lord to work through you. Is he your Savior? Do you hold all things loosely so you can be a blessing to others? Our world needs to see the love of Christ lived through us.

What is in Your Hand?
07/22/12
Dr. Phil Wilkes, Matthew 25:14-30
Jesus tells a story about a master who gives each of his 3 servants an amount of money to manage for him while he is away. One servant gets 5 talents, one receives 3 talents, and the last one receives 1 talent. They are to manage wisely their masters resources.
On his return the master asks each servant to report on what they did with the masters money. The one with 5 talents and 3 talents each doubled the amount. But the servant with 1 talent buried it in the ground. The master gave the exact same praise to each of the first two servants. The third servant, however, was punished for not investing his master's resources.
Everything you have is a gift from God. Your life, skills, spiritual gifts, financial resources and time are all gifts to be managed for Jesus. You are only the manager of the Lord's gifts to you. How are you doing in managing God's resources?
One day Jesus will return and will require each of his disciples to give an account of what they did with the Lord's gifts and resources. Jesus calls his followers to be wise in investing and using what they are given to meet needs and advance the kingdom of God.
So consider the following questions: How are you using your skills to serve others in God's church? How much time do you take to read your bible, pray and engage in meeting needs of others? What percentage of your finances do you give to God's work through his church? The beginning point for stewardship is the tithe (10%). While the tithe is never mandated in the New Testament Jesus always talked about sacrificial giving, which goes beyond the minimum requirements of the law. So are you giving sacrificially to God's church?
Imagine what an impact Christians can make when all those who know Jesus start using some time for a ministry. Consider all the needs that could be met if each Christian were to tithe to their local church. We would be able to meet needs of missionaries, provide resources for local ministry, and give substantial help to those unemployed.
The average Christian gives only about 2% to their local church. What could happen if the resources we hold in our hands were to be given to the Lord? There is great potential when God's people start tithing and giving to the Lord the first portion of what they earn.
In most churches 80% of the ministry happens by about 20% of the people. It is no wonder so many faithful Christians burn out. They keep pushing themselves because so few are willing to actually engage in serving. Again, imagine the possibilities when each Christian engages in using their skills and spiritual gifts in just one ministry.
So decide that you are going to let God have your life completely. Get involved in a ministry in your church. Start tithing. Invest in a daily time of prayer and bible study. Watch and see what great things God is going to do through you. You will be truly amazed as God touches lives because of your faithfulness.

How Familiar Are You With Jesus?

Dr. Phil Wilkes, Mark 6:1-6
Jesus returns to his hometown of Nazareth. You would think people would be thrilled to have Jesus come home, especially after hearing about how He can heal people and cast demons out of people. But the people in Jesus hometown become critical and questioning of Jesus. The knew where Jesus came from, an unmarried pregnant teenager. His family was not from an important family line. Just common folk.
So his hometown people had drawn conclusion about Jesus and refused to change them when they heard Jesus for themselves. Their preconceived ideas about Jesus became a stumbling block to their putting faith in the Lord.
What the people missed is that Jesus was the Son of God. He could bring new life to his hometown people but they refused to believe Jesus. Their preconceived ideas kept them from putting faith in the Lord.
So how do you respond to Jesus in your life? Will you accept the distortions and false conclusion about Jesus that some have made? Maybe you have grown up learning information about Jesus. But having knowledge about Jesus is not the same as giving your life to Jesus. What will you do with what you know about him?
Open your heart to Jesus. Ask Jesus to forgive your sin and take control of your life. He will do more than you could ever have imagined or expected.

Your Best Friend
07/08/12
Dr. Phil Wilkes, John 15:9-18
How many friends do you have? Facebook will keep track of how many people you become “friends” with. But not everybody who is a “friend” on Facebook are close, intimate friends are the? Some are really just friends of a friend. Some are people who want to connect with you for various reasons. But if you had a crisis or your life became really messy, not all your Facebook “friends” could be counted on to help.
We discover, however, someone who does choose you regardless of how complicated, challenging or hard your life becomes. This friend wants to walk into your life when others are walking out. In John 15:16 we read “you did not choose me, but I chose you...” Did you get that? Jesus chose you when you were not even thinking about him. How Incredible!
Jesus is a friend that “loves at all times...” Proverbs 17:17. Jesus is also “a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” Proverbs 18:24. You can count on Jesus to always love you, to always be involved in your life. When you send Jesus a friend request, He responds by coming into your life.
Just as Jesus loves you the Lord tells us to “love each other as I have loved you.” There are many people who need someone who will love them in their unlovely moments. You can become a friend that is present in someone's life when they most need you.
Jesus shows you how much he loves you and what kind of friend He will be to you. He then sends you out to be that same kind of friend to others. So get busy sending your friend requests. Someone today needs you to be their friend.

Living in Freedom
07/01/12
Dr. Phil Wilkes, 1 Timothy 2:1-7; Micah 6:8
We are blessed to live in a free nation. Many men and women have made the ultimate sacrifice of their lives to keep us free. Because of their sacrifices we have freedom to worship God or not to worship Him. We are able to pursue our dreams without government interference. Freedom is a priceless gift.
There is another type of freedom that cannot be won with the military or bought with money. Spiritually we are in bondage to a sinful nature. This spiritual freedom does not come through a military. Money cannot buy this freedom. It cannot be legislated by a government.
For us to have the opportunity to be free from this sinful nature it cost God his son Jesus Christ. Only a perfect person could make the sacrifice for our sin. Jesus came and willingly gave up his life for you. He did it because he loves you unconditionally. Spiritual freedom cost God his son. Christ gives you freedom from the control of a sinful nature.
With freedom comes responsibility. Jesus says use your freedom to serve God and love one another. Take care of each other. When you see someone in need, do what you can to help. Go out of your way if necessary. Micah 6:8 tells us that God loves justice and mercy. God desires that you walk humbly with Him.
Do what is right even when others don't. Treat people the way Jesus treats you. Extend mercy and forgiveness to others just as Jesus gives you mercy and forgiveness. Walk humbly with God. Trust God when life doesn't make sense. Adjust your life to God's truth. Be willing to let God's word be your standard for life.
Freedom comes through sacrifice and you are responsible for using freedom wisely.

Salt and Light
06/24/12
Dr. Phil Wilkes, Matthew 5:13-16
When Jesus enters your life there will be authentic transformation. You are spiritually alive through Jesus Christ. You have been given a new heart and a new nature. The Apostle Paul also says you become Christ's ambassador representing Jesus to people.
As a disciple of Jesus you become salt in your community. Salt is a preservative. It prevents decay. As a Christian the Lord works through you to arrest moral decay. You also become a light to people who still don't know Jesus as their Savior.
Jesus described himself as “the light of the world.” As a disciple you reflect the light of Jesus in the dark world that we live. The light exposes that which is not true. Light provides guidance. You become a beacon brilliantly shining and showing people the Lord.
Let your light shine for Jesus. There are people who will be touched by Christ because you did.

What's a Dad to do?
06/17/12
Dr. Phil Wilkes, Ephesians 6:1-4
Dads can have a powerful impact in their families. The foundation for life is Jesus Christ. As a follower of Jesus you can be a Godly example in your family. Ask yourself, “is my spiritual life worth imitating?” Are you reflecting Jesus each day?
Give unconditional love to family members. Love your family the same way God loves you, unconditionally. Pray for each person in your family every day. I Thessalonians 5:17 says “pray without ceasing.”
Have fun at home. Learn to laugh and not take yourself too seriously. Take time to have fun with your kids while they are at home. Connect with them in healthy ways. Model the Christian life for them. You have a powerful influence in your family. Use that influence to help them know Jesus and grow into Godly young men and women. Dad, love your wife unconditionally.
Let your faith in Jesus shine brightly in your home.

Building a Legacy
06/10/12
Dr. Phil Wilkes, Deuteronomy 11:18-20
God gave instructions to his people to teach their children to walk in his ways as they prepared to enter the promised land. The temptation would be to get busy building a new life in the promised land and forget or ignore God in their lives. So the Lord tells them to teach their kids to love God.
It is important for parents to have the right focus. The temptation is to push Jesus to the fringes or leftovers of one's life. Jesus is to be the center of your life and your family. Realize you are in spiritual combat for the heart of each member of your family.
Share your faith with each member. Be proactive and intentional in living your faith at home. Live authentically for Jesus. You will have a powerful influence for Christ in your family. Take advantage of teachable moments and be intentional in helping others in your family come to love Jesus Christ and live for him.

When Being Family is Hard
06/03/12
Dr. Phil Wilkes, 2 Samuel 13:1-2,14,21-22
You would think that using King David as an example for families today would be a good thing. But even though David is described as a “man after God's own heart” he also had problems in his family. Through his heartache and conflict with his two sons Absolom and Amnon and his daughter Tamar we can learn some important lessons about being family.
David refused to deal with his anger towards Absolom for killing his brother Amnon. David did not confront Amnon for raping his half sister Tamar. All of this simmered under the surface and King David became filled with bitterness towards Absolom. At one point David refused to reconcile with Absolom when he had the opportunity over Absolom killinge Amnon.
Eventually Absolom is killed seeking to take the throne from his father David. While David's men are defending him, David is more concerned about the welfare of his son turned enemy Amnon than he is about his own troops. Once again David allows unresolved family issues to hinder him from nurturing the many good relationships he had.
Being family is not always easy. It can be filled with pain, disappointment, conflict, and betrayal. But it is critical that we address conflict and hurt quickly. Don't allow it to gain a foothold in your heart. It will only cause you and those you love more problems. Deal quickly with it. Maybe you cannot undo all the hurt, but you can go forward doing what you can to facilitate healing in relationship in your family. This will honor God and will enable you to show his love to family members that are hard to love.

Hold Fast

Joshua Brownfield, John 20:20-23
At the end of his life, Paul urges Timothy to continue to hold to the Gospel that had been delivered to Paul by Christ Himself. Timothy, along with all other Christians since the time of the Apostles, was tasked with following the standard and guarding the deposit of the Gospel. Recent findings by prominent sociologists indicate, however, that the church may not be doing as well at that as it should. Thus, it is more important than ever to hold fast to the Gospel.

A Mom's Love
05/13/12
Dr. Phil Wilkes, John 20:20-23
This story about a mom going to Jesus on behalf of her two sons may seem selfish in some ways. Yet there are also some positive aspects to this that I want us to consider today as we honor our moms.
James and John were two of Jesus disciples. They also formed two thirds of the inner circle (Peter being the third) of disciples with whom Jesus was particularly close. Their mom comes to make a request of Jesus. Her request that they be given seats at the left and right of Jesus may appear self serving. But consider the positive aspects of her interaction with Jesus.
She came to Jesus and talked with him. With all the demands on mothers today you need to take time to sit with Jesus, talk with him and listen to him. Sometimes prayer is birthed out of necessity. Talk with Jesus each day about your family.
This mom made a specific request. She prayed her sons would make an impact in God's Kingdom. Pray for your family members hearts to be tender to the Lord. Pray for them to come to know Jesus as Savior and Lord. Have big expectations for your family. This mom wanted them at each side of Jesus. Don't limit what God wants to do in and through your family members. He will do far more than we could hope or imagine as we entrust our family to Him.

What Does It Mean To Be Born Again?
05/06/12
Dr. Phil Wilkes, 2 Tim 1:1-11
Jesus and Nicodemus have a very interesting conversation one evening. This well educated Pharisee, who knew the Old Testament scriptures very well, comes to Jesus to try and figure out who the Lord really is. As Jesus talks with Nicodemus our Lord tries to point Nicodemus to see the true need in his life to be born again.
Nicodemus should have been able to put together all the prophecies about the Messiah and see them coming to life in Jesus. But he missed it. Jesus didn't fit the Jews idea of Messiah. Our Lord gets to the heart of Nicodemus need by telling this well versed Jewish leader “you must be born again.”
So do you know Jesus Christ? Information about the Lord isn't enough. Being a good person does not remove sin. Joining a church or being baptized will not make a person acceptable to God. Jesus came to be the perfect sacrifice for our sin and offer anyone who comes to Him a new life.
Are you born again? Have you given your life to Jesus Christ and experienced his forgiveness? Once you know Christ the second step is to be baptized as a follower of Jesus. Baptism does not wash away sin but it does represent Jesus forgiving you, making you clean and giving you a new life. Finally, it is important to connect with a local church as a member where you serve your Lord. These are decisions that we each must make for ourselves. The greatest decision you will ever make is to give your life to Jesus Christ.

When Your Fire Goes Out

Dr. Phil Wilkes, 2 Tim 1:1-11
When life gets hard and becomes complicated, where do you turn for help? Who do you seek out for guidance? The Apostle Paul writes to Timothy, his son in the ministry, to encourage and exhort him to fan into flame the gift of God. Timothy was a young pastor. The church had some teaching false doctrine. Some looked down on Timothy because of his youth. Paul writes to tell Timothy, stir up your faith. Fan into flame your gift from God.
We need to also pay attention to our faith in Jesus Christ. By nurturing your faith you keep the right perspective when life is good. You recognize God is the source of your blessings. When life is hard you remember that you do not face the challenges and crisis alone.
But how do you stir up your faith? In this message you will hear suggestions to enable your faith to burn brightly for Christ. The longer you know the Lord should result in a faith that is burning brightly, giving comfort and strength for trials and offering hope to others.
Ask God to show you what you can do to stir up your faith this week.

You Are Not Alone
04/22/12
Dr. Phil Wilkes, Act 1:4-5
Jesus gave the disciples instructions to go into the world to preach the gospel and make disciples. But our Lord also instructed them to wait in Jerusalem for the Holy Spirit to come upon them before going out to share the gospel with others. However, waiting does not mean inactivity. It means watching for God. The disciples prayed together for 10 days before God poured out his Spirit on them.
Prayer is vital to your connection with God. Imagine the possibilities as we watch and listen for God to speak to us and we respond to Him. The question becomes not “how can I have more of the Holy Spirit but how can the Holy Spirit have more of me?
Once God speaks then we are to respond with obedience to Jesus. Obedience reflects your love for Christ. As you obey God will do far more than you could ever hope or imagine through you.

Don't Keep This to Yourself
04/15/12
Dr. Phil Wilkes, Matthew 28:16-20
Many Christians ask themselves, “what does God want me to do?” Jesus told us to love God with all our heart, mind and soul. He then said to love others as you love yourself. Finally our Lord told us that He came to serve, not to be served. So our vision statement at New Colony is simply to “Love God, Love Others and Serve the World Through Jesus Christ.”
Jesus told his disciples to go and preach the gospel. That was their mission. Rick Warren observes “your ministry is your service to believers.” “Your mission is your service to unbelievers.” John 20:21 Jesus said, “As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.”
Some Christians want to share their faith but are not sure how to do so. This message gives you some simple suggestions for how to share your testimony of how Jesus has transformed your life. You have a mission field where you work, go to school and live. The gospel is too good to keep to ourselves. Who can you share God's love with today?

Dr. Phil Wilkes, Matthew 28:1-7
Matthew records for us the events of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. His death on the cross had to have the disciples wondering what's next for them. Yet on this morning women come to them talking about Jesus not being in the tomb. Through encounters they have with the resurrected Lord they realize everything Jesus had told them was true.
Jesus is alive! His resurrection changes how we view the cross. Jesus resurrection defeated death and now the grave is not the final word for Christians. Jesus is our high priest who lives to intercede for us continually before the Father.
The Good News is that we serve a Risen Savior. He is alive. That changes everything.

Words From the Cross: "It Is Finished"
04/01/12
Dr. Phil Wilkes, John 19:30, Luke 23:46
“Tetelestai”. It Is Finished. When Jesus spoke this word from the cross he declared that everything the Father asked him to do has been accomplished. Jesus came to be the sacrifice for our sin. We could never do this on our own. In his love Jesus gave up his life so that we could be forgiven of sin and receive a new life.
“Tetelestai” also reminds us that the final sacrifice for sin has been made. Jesus never did anything wrong. He could give himself in our place as the perfect sacrifice. There will never have to be another one.
Jesus also declared “Father into your hands I commit my spirit.” Fully confident in completing his mission Jesus gives himself back to his Father. Because of Jesus we can also have confidence that when Christ enters our lives that we are securely in the Fathers hands. Nothing can change that fact.
Jesus came to seek and save the lost. He came to do the Father's work. He came to give himself as the perfect sacrifice and die so we can live.

Words From the Cross: "I Thirst"
03/25/12
Dr. Phil Wilkes, John 19:28
Jesus once again reveals his humanity on the cross. He declares “I Thirst”. Jesus was fully human and fully divine. Heresies had arisen claiming Jesus only appeared to be human but was only a spiritual being. Some believed the body was evil and God would never take on flesh. But Jesus really did clothe himself in human skin. That's why Jesus can sympathize with us today. He knows what we go through.
Jesus declaration of thirst is a fulfillment of scripture as well. It is but one final evidence that Jesus has fulfilled all the prophecies concerning the coming messiah.
Jesus came to quench our spiritual thirst. Where do you find refreshment when life makes you tired and weary, when your soul is overwhelmed? Jesus says in John 7:37-38 “If anyone thirst, let him come to me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”

Words From the Cross: "Why Have You Forsaken Me?"
03/18/12
Dr. Phil Wilkes, Matthew 27:45-46
Pain is part of life. Heartaches and brokenness do not discriminate in whose lives they reside. Noone is exempt. Part of it is because we are all sinners and sometimes we create pain in ourselves or in others. Sometimes pain is the result of simply living in a fallen world scarred by sin.
People have different ways of dealing with pain. Some withdraw and isolate from everyone. Some lash out in anger at whoever is near them. Still others find means of coping that help them through it.
Volumes have been written on pain and suffering as it relates to knowing God. The fourth word from Jesus on the cross is a question made while suffering: “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?”
Jesus life was characterized by intimacy with the Father. For all of eternity leading to the cross Jesus has known deep intimacy with God. Jesus decisions and agenda in this life came from intimate relationship with God. We need that same intimacy. It only happens when you are intentional about time with the Father.
On the cross something has caused great anguish in Jesus. When our sins were thrust upon Jesus it impacted his intimacy with the Father. Yet God was never closer than when he was in Jesus reconciling the world to himself.
At times you may feel God has left you and you ask the same question as Jesus. Be assured that God does not abandon you. He desires to do his good work in you. Keep your focus on Jesus. He invites you to come to him for rest. Come to him for forgiveness and freedom from guilt. Come to him when overwhelmed. Jesus offers you his peace in the midst of the storm.
It may feel as if God has forsaken you. Be assured God has not done that. He loves you unconditionally and longs to do a good work in you.

Words From the Cross: "Woman, Behold Your Son."
03/11/12
Dr. Phil Wilkes, John 19:26-27
Words. They can cause great celebration or deep despair. With the spoken word, God created the earth and everything in it. With words Jesus calmed a raging storm and cast out demons. With words our Lord described who belongs to God's family.
Jesus mother and brothers had come to a home to get Jesus. He was inside the house teaching with his disciples and others gathered around him. When told his family was outside, Jesus asked “who is my family?” Then he said “whoever does the will of God is his brother, sister and mother.”
The truth is we need each other. Through faith in Jesus Christ we connect to the larger body of Christ comprised of Christians around the globe. We also are able to connect with a local church where we become part of God's family in that specific location. The Christian life was never designed by God to be lived in isolation.
God knew we need each other as we journey through life. We will all face struggles, challenges, temptations and tough seasons in life and having other Christians to walk with us can make the difference between giving up and continuing the journey.
Jesus was in the midst of his worst storm. Dying for the sins of every person in the world so we could choose to follow him as our Savior and Lord. In all of his pain and suffering Jesus is still taking care of people. He looks at his mom and then to the disciple John. He declares that John is now her son and she is now his mother. Jesus made sure his responsibility as the eldest son to care for his mother was taken care of. Jesus was still serving others while on the cross.
Being connected to other Christians in a local church is critical for you receiving support. It also affords you the opportunity to emulate your Savior by serving others when they are facing a storm. Who are you serving in your family of faith?

Words From the Cross: "Today, You Will Be With Me In Paradise"
03/04/12
Dr. Phil Wilkes, Luke 23:43
Jesus is hanging between two criminals. While on the cross these two criminals hear Jesus pray to God to forgive those who put him on that cross. Maybe that's what compelled one of the criminals to make a request of Jesus. His request is for Jesus to remember him when the Lord comes into his kingdom. The second thief taunts and hurls insults at Jesus.
Both men had the same opportunity to respond to Jesus. They are both under a death sentence. Jesus could have appealed to the second man. God gives each of us the freedom to follow Jesus or go our own way.
Their choice will determine their destiny in eternity. Soon each man would step into eternity and what happens to them is dependent on how they responded to God. Jesus says one of them will enter paradise with him.
Suffering causes a person to either pull away from God blaming Him for their problems or closer to God seeking his help. When you face hard times remember that you have a high priest that understands all you will go through. Jesus stands ready to transform anyone who asks for his help.

Words From the Cross: "Father, Forgive Them…"
02/26/12
Dr. Phil Wilkes, Luke 23:34
Over the next several weeks leading to Easter we will be thinking about the statements Jesus made while on the cross. The first is that Jesus prayed for those who had put him on the cross. What was his prayer? It wasn't for them to be struck done or for angels to come rescue him. Jesus prayed “ Father forgive them because they don't know what they are doing.” That prayer could only come from one filled with unconditional love.
In order to have a personal relationship with God we must also be forgiven by Jesus. Our sin separates us from God. Only Jesus is able to forgive our sin, remove our guilt and give us a new life. After experiencing his forgiveness we are called to extend forgiveness to others in our lives that have hurt, offended, betrayed or injured us. Yes, that is hard, And yes, it is not something that we naturally do on our own. But through knowing Jesus Christ, we are enabled to give others the same forgiveness that we have received through Christ.
As we live out our faith, as we begin to extend this forgiveness to others, you will make an incredible impact in their lives. Francis Chan calls this “crazy love.” The world cannot understand this kind of unconditional love. Yet, because of Christ, this is exactly what we can give to those who inflict pain in our lives.

If God Is For Us
02/19/12
Joshua Brownfield, Romans 8:31-39
At the conclusion of Romans 8, Paul asks a series of five questions to show that the Christian has nothing to fear. Because God is for them and has justified them, they do not need to fear anything, especially condemnation before their Creator. Nothing can separate them from God's love, because God is both sovereign and good. He will not allow anything to come to them except whatever is for their eternal benefit.

We Need Each Other
02/05/12
Dr. Phil Wilkes, Hebrews 10:19-25
The church is God's idea. The Bible describes the church or body of Christ as the “bride of Christ”. It is also described as a body with Christ as the head. The church is made up of people who love Jesus and are simply seeking to follow him. Life can be challenging, hard and overwhelming. God knew this. So he created the church to be a place where his people can come together to – encourage one another, pray for one another, carry one another's burdens, serve one another, motivate one another to serve, and to worship God together. This message will help you see the ways the local church can care for each other.

Prayer for the Rest of Us
01/29/12
Dr. Phil Wilkes, 1 Thessalonians 5:17
Prayer. As a Christian you know you are supposed to pray. But maybe you are not sure where to begin or what to say to God. Anyone can pray. It isn't complicated. Start where you are. You don't need to have your life in order before talking with God. Just start the conversation. Be honest with God. Some of the prayers by people in scripture are brutally honest. Sometimes those prayers express anger or frustration at God. You can be honest and tell God how you feel and what you are thinking. Keep the conversation going throughout the day. You don't have to be secluded and quiet to always pray. You can pray short, quick prayers during your day. Give thanks for something that works out. Praise him for something that touches your heart in a special way. Ask for help. Intercede for a need you find out about in someone else's life. Just start the conversation. You will discover God to be a very good listener.

Follow The Road Map
01/22/12
Dr. Phil Wilkes, Nehemiah 8:1-10
We all need directions sometimes. Roadmaps and GPS can be a great tool when you don't know how to get somewhere. God has given us a road map for life called the Bible. In this book you discover how much God loves you and the great lengths He will go to in order to bring you into his family. God's word is different than any other book because the words of the Bible are alive and active.
God's word points to Jesus Christ as the author of our salvation. The words of God are given so you can know the Lord intimately, have guidance for daily living and be reminded of God's promises to you. In his word we also see how seriously God takes sin and how harmful sin is in a person's life.
While the Bible is consistently at the top of the best sellers list not everyone in the world has the bible in their own language. There are 6,500+ languages and 2,000 do not have any of the Bible in their heart language. Only 465 language groups have the entire Bible in their language.
In many places around the world it is illegal to own a Bible. You can be put in prison, tortured or killed. Take advantage of your freedom to read and apply God's truth to your life. When a person gets lost they will sometimes consult their map or GPS. At other times they think they know where they are going but end up lost for several hours.
You don't have to wander around confused and lost. By reading God's word regularly you will have God's direction for your life. Take advantage of all the free online resources that can help you develop a reading plan to read the entire bible in a year. God is waiting to speak to you and often He does so as you read his word.

Your Power Source
01/15/12
Dr. Phil Wilkes, Acts 8:14-17
Jesus came to show us a new way of life. His purpose was to give himself up so that you and I might be forgiven of sin and receive the gift of a new life. But how are people supposed to live this new life that Jesus gives?
The disciples were not sure what they would do when Jesus went back to the Father. But our Lord promised to send the Holy Spirit. Every person who puts trust in Jesus Christ as Lord is filled with God's Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit convicts people of sin and draws people to Christ. In Galatians 5:22-23 Paul describes how the Holy Spirit shapes Christians. As the Spirit produces good fruit a believer becomes a living testimony of the transforming power of Christ.
Finally the Holy Spirit equips Christians to serve the Lord and others by placing spiritual gifts in each Christian. Every believer has been gifted by the Holy Spirit for the purpose of serving and building others up in the local church.

Getting To Know Jesus
01/08/12
Dr. Phil Wilkes, John 1:1-18
Who would you like to meet and spend some time with? It can be anyone alive today. Who would you tell? So how does it make you feel to know that God, who created you, wants to spend time with you? God came looking for you. Jesus invites you to get to know Him and experience the true life that is only possible through Him.
Every day you are given 24 hours. You make decisions about how you will use your skills, your gifts and resources. What you do is influenced by your values and priorities. As you reflect on Jesus you will be reminded of all the Lord can do in you and through you. John says Jesus is the true light and therefore can give you direction in life. Jesus is the living word of God. All he has to do is speak his word into your life and it will happen. He knows best how to work in your life. Jesus is the embodiment of God's love. You can trust him to always work in your life for good. Jesus is the source of grace and truth. You don't have to try harder to earn God's forgiveness. You welcome Jesus into your life as Savior and He forgives you and gives you a new heart. Jesus is truth. He does not change God will not trick you or deceive you.
You have to decide if you are willing to trade what you have been doing for yourself in order to flesh out the life Jesus wants for you. His love for you means He will not force you to serve Him. That's your decision. As you read John 1 consider who Jesus is and what He can do in you and through you. What do you need to do to give yourself fully to Christ?

What Now?
01/01/12
Dr. Phil Wilkes, Matthew 2:1-2, 13-15
Christmas is over. The gifts have been opened and some of them returned to the store for what you really wanted. Just kidding. What comes next? No doubt you sang some Christmas carols during December, perhaps attended a special Christmas service or choir musical and paused to reflect on the serene, peaceful nativity scene. But what now?
Joseph and Mary are now parents. Jesus is a tiny infant that must now be cared for each day. After all the head spinning events of angels visiting them both, shepherds and magi showing up they now get down to real life.
Real life for them means fleeing to Egypt because a death threat has been issued for Jesus by Herod. Real life meant settling in Nazareth and raising Jesus.
What about you? Now that you have celebrated Jesus birth what do you do with Jesus? His parents had to make an effort to raise him. They would experience times when it wasn't easy, comfortable or convenient to be Jesus parents. The same is true for anyone today who seeks to follow Christ.
Yet God calls us to this amazing journey with Him. While it isn't always easy we do know deep in our hearts that God only leads you in the way that is best for you. It isn't always comfortable to live for Christ, but Jesus never promised that to us. Sometimes you will be inconvenienced by following Jesus. Mary was pregnant outside marriage. Not convenient. Joseph was told to go through with the marriage. What would his friends think? Not convenient. Christians today in many nations are persecuted, arrested and even killed for following Jesus. You get the idea.
If you want easy and comfortable don't follow Jesus. If you want a life filled with purpose, joy and peace and power then Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. So the question for you is, “What Now?”
