Getting your feet wet is necessary to fully enjoy being at the lake or ocean. Getting your feet wet in a church refers to Christians using spiritual gifts to serve one another.
Jesus came to serve and to take our place on the cross. But his disciples kept arguing about who the greatest of them was. They jostled for position in God’s kingdom. The Lord keeps reminding them that the greatest among them are the ones who serve others with no expectation of getting anything in return.
How many churches have closed because church members were more focused on protecting their “turf” than serving one another? Consider what can happen, however, if all the Christians in a local church die to themselves, start serving one another with their spiritual gifts and cooperate to share the gospel in their community?
It begins with you. When you give your life to Jesus as Savior you also receive the Holy Spirit. God’s Spirit equips you with spiritual gifts to serve others in the local church and to reach your community for Christ. The tragedy is that in the average American church it is only 20% of the people doing 80% of the serving and ministry. Don’t be another statistic.
Take a step of faith. Start serving in a local church if you are not doing so. Serve without expecting anything in return. Serve, using your spiritual gifts, because you are grateful Jesus died for you on the cross and has given you a new life. Serve because you want others to know Jesus as Savior and the abundant life he offers. Serve because we don’t know how much longer Jesus will delay before coming back.
So this Sunday, decide you are going to use your spiritual gifts to serve others. You will be amazed at how God will work through you to build up other Christians and meet needs.
