Life doesn’t always go as planned. As David writes in Psalm 23:4 there are times you and I will be in the valley. Not the high mountaintops with breath taking vistas. Sometimes one must go through the valley to get to the mountaintop.
The question becomes who do you follow in the valley? Who do you put your trust in? Yourself? You already know that doesn’t always work out. Other people? Following the crowd usually takes you to a place you don’t want to be. What do you do?
David writes verses 1-3 as one sheep bragging to others about the wonderful care of his faithful Shepherd, the Lord God. Now in verse 4 David shifts to a much more intimate personal conversation with the Lord. In the valley David declares to God, “even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil. For you are with me, your rod and your staff they comfort me.”
David knows that the Lord is the faithful shepherd. He is well acquainted with the valley of the shadow of death. He’s been this way before. Notice that the shepherd does not keep you in the valley. He leads you through it. Who do you follow in the valley? Follow Jesus, the Good Shepherd.
